Peranakan, commonly known as ‘local born’
generally refers to people of mixed Chinese and
Malay/Indonesian heritage. They address 
themselves as "Baba Nyonya". Nyonya is the
term for the women and Baba for the men. 
Peranakans migrated between Singapore,
Malaysia and Indonesia during the 15th and 17th
centuries. In Singapore, the Peranakan now form
a significant community and have retained many
of their cultural practices until today.
